FELL IN!
Fitness
trainer Alex Marek from British Military Fitness put around 15 of us through
our paces on Tuesday, February 12.
Alex focused on exercises to improve our core strength, stability and flexibility
– with some speed training thrown in.
If you missed it, the good news is that Alex will be back
on March 11, April 8 and May 6. The sessions are free to
members.
After
all that politics, you may feel like getting out for a run. Several Barnes
Runners have taken part in the UK Time Trial series – a series of 5k
timed runs that take place every Saturday at 9am.
RACING
TIMES
The
tenth annual ASICS Kingston Breakfast Run takes place on Sunday, March 30.
The event attracts more than 5,000 competitors of all ages and abilities,
from celebrities to elite athletes to fun runners completing either the 8.2
or 16 mile course.
The
inaugural Ful-On Duathlon hosted by Ful-On Tri Club will take place on Saturday
26th April 2008 at Chertsey MOD Test Track at Longcross in Surrey. The venue,
which has been featured on Top Gear, offers closed roads and challenging hills
to tempt the racing snakes amongst you. There will be two distances on offer:
Standard
distance: 5k run (2 laps) / 20k bike (4 laps) / 5k run (2 laps)
Sprint distance: 2.5k run (1 lap) / 10k bike (2 laps) / 2.5k run (1 lap)
The race
limit is 300 and there will be prizes for the first three men/women; first
three male/female vets, along with team prizes (men: 4 to score; women: 3
to score) to promote a little inter-club rivalry. Online entries are open
here:

COACH
DAVE AND COACH SAM
Congratulations
to Dave Kelly and Sam Allpass, who have started on the coaching ladder. Dave
has reached Level 2, Sam Level 1, on the UK Athletics core course. Dave is
apparently now an expert on javelin and shot put. We look forward to receiving
the benefit of their expertise in the months to come.
Barnes
Runners have been out and about in force this month. Ten of us finished the
Wokingham half marathon (all inside two hours), while others have regularly
run time trials in Richmond Park.
Congratulations
to David Allen, Dylan Grimes and Sam Allpass, who all beat 1:25 at Wokingham.
David and Sam look on track to beat three hours in the Rome marathon next
month (no pressure, guys!).
You can
see the Wokingham results (Brent, you may want to look away now) at http://www.wokinghamhalfmarathon.co.uk/
Dylan
has finished inside the top 10 in the park runs. Jim Perrie, Nick Willan,
Hannah Holden, Daniel Penton and David Cornock have recorded respectable times
even if they were all beaten by a man pushing a baby stroller at the weekend.

The
race starts and finishes in the heart of Kingston Town Centre at 8am. For
full details and an entry form visit http://www.humanrace.co.uk/index.shtml
One week later, the Thames Towpath 10 takes place and several Barnes Runners
have already entered this fun race. It starts at 0930 near Chiswick Bridge
and on past experience is over early enough to make it to L’Amandine
for breakfast. You can enter online here

ON THE RADIO
From Sophie Woolley, a Serpentine member:
“Date for your diary - the adaptation of my comedy, When to Run, is being
broadcast on Radio 4 in the afternoon play slot on Thursday 21st February at
2.15pm.
Unlike the stage show, I'm playing just one of the characters
in the radio play, with three actresses in the other roles.” You can
