BARN ELMS RUNNING TRACK: THE FIGHT GOES ON……

The Barnes Bugle is also available as an Adobe Acrobat (pdf) download....

Reports of the death of the Barn Elms track may be premature. Richmond Council has agreed to investigate whether an all-weather track could survive the redevelopment.

The local paper reported: “On Monday, January 14, Richmond Council cabinet decided to allow four firms to bid for a 5.5 acre area of Barn Elms in Barnes which will be sold or leased in order to fund redevelopment of the rest of the site.
FANCY A RUN?
They take place on Wimbledon Common, in Bushy Park and Richmond Park – as well as further afield, in Harare and Cardiff.

Clive Tulloh, Dylan Grimes, David Allen and Sam Allpass have posted some impressive finishes and times. Sophia Turner (left) posted a spectacular time improvement week-to-week, although this may have been due to her missing the mass start by about five minutes seven days previously…..

The time trials are free to enter and involve minimal hassle in joining in. See for yourself at http://www.parkrun.com/

After all that politics, you may feel like getting out for a run. Several Barnes Runners have taken part in the UK Time Trial series – a series of 5k timed runs that take place every Saturday at 9am.
RACING TIMES

A few of us are doing the Wokingham half marathon on February 10 and the Reading half on March 2.

If you’ve missed the deadlines for these events, here are a couple of alternatives. Emma Crawford suggests the British Military Fitness runs in Surrey – a few of us did the 10k last autumn and can vouch for its hilly toughness.

The Kingston Breakfast Run – 8.2 miles or 16 miles – takes place on March 30. Several Barnes Runners have run this in the past and can recommend it.

The more ambitious among you may fancy The London Triathlon on August 9 and 10.

Sam Allpass and David Allen are scheduled to run the Rome Marathon on March 16. Supporters, groupies, hangers-on all welcome.

Running Inn - Eastbourne

“The Running Inn team have been running courses for runners of all abilities for two and half years. We’ve had excellent feedback and extensive press coverage.

We’re based at the foot of the South Downs, less than a mile from the start of the Beachy Head marathon, and courses are run from the four-star silver rated, Guesthouse East.

A typical course costs just £150+vat (excluding accommodation), and includes V02 max tests, circuits/resistance for runners, hill sessions, Pilates for runners, talks on nutrition, training shoes/gear, and expert advice from coaches and former high class athletes – as well as fantastic running on the South Downs.

You can also opt for accommodation only at our beautiful home. Get a group together, perhaps a club team, and just come for the runs in breath-taking surroundings - the aforementioned South Downs for hill work with views, and the mile-marked Eastbourne prom for some fast and furious speed work by the sea. We’ll provide good healthy food (B&B and half board options), and you can bend our ears about running – we won’t get bored! Prices are from £70 per night, based on two sharing. If you want a bit more from us, you can pick from our course menu – nutrition, Pilates, fitness tests, one to one schedule advice – the choice is yours.

Please email, or telephone, or visit our website for more about us and our team,

A report initially suggested an all-weather running track and tennis courts would have to be removed from the site to allow an enabling development, likely to be a health and fitness club, to be built.

But Councillor Serge Lourie, council leader, said investigations would be made as to whether a new track could fit.
Seven residents, including Olympic gold medallist Ben Hunt-Davis, and Barnes councillor Paul Hodgins spoke at Monday's meeting protesting about the loss of some sporting facilities and the principle of selling the land.

Coun Lourie said: "I was very impressed by some of the comments about the need for a running track and I asked officers to investigate whether this is viable or desirable."

You can read more about the plans here.

A Cabinet consultation meeting is scheduled for next Tuesday, February 5 at Kitson Hall, Kitson Road. Time tbc. Please attend if you can.
