AND FINALLY ........

THE ROTTERDAM THREE – THE RUNNERS THEY COULDN’T STOP

The Barnes Bugle is also available as an Adobe Acrobat (pdf) download....

It seemed like a good idea at the time – a few Sundays ago in L’Amandine.

Dave Kelly, half-way through a tuna melt, suggested a gentle spring marathon in Rotterdam. Fast course, mild weather. What could possibly go wrong?

Well, the weather forecast for starters. It turned into the hottest day of the year – 33 degrees, allegedly, and we’ll accept that in mitigation for our times.

It was hot. Very hot. So hot the Dutch took the decision to abandon the race three and a half hours after the start.. Barnes Runners are made of sterner stuff and Dave Kelly, Sarah Hynes and David Cornock all made it to the finish line to collect our medals.

The abandonment of the race even made it onto the news – our chairman was live on Radio 5 Live from the arrivals lounge at Heathrow.

David Allen, Brent Davis and Sarah Pitcher ran the Rotterdam 10k and offered the marathoners vocal support on the first Barnes Runners overseas trip. A tough run – but a great weekend. Where next?

BR AT LONDON MARATHON
Good luck to all the Barnes Runners taking part in Sunday’s London Marathon – Sam Allpass, Brent Davis, Jim Perrie and Kirstie Dunlop.

A BR expedition party will be trying to keep track with the runners at various points en route. Contact Dave Kelly - david.kelly@pobox.com– for the plan of action.

BARGAIN KIT OFFER
British Military Fitness, who organise running clubs in London, will be visiting Barnes Runners on Tuesday, May 1 to offer us a sampler training class.
QUIZ NIGHT - MAY 11
With all the marathon and half marathon runners we now have If we don't hold a booze up soon we may be in danger of becoming a serious running club… we wouldn't want that to happen!

So to celebrate all the marathons and half marathons that Barnes Runners have completed during the winter and spring we will be holding a quiz night at the club house.

To add a bit of interest to the quiz we have invited our friendly rivals from the Sheen Shufflers along, so brush up on your trivia, this is our best chance yet to give them a thrashing!

The Quiz Night will be held on 11 May starting at 7:30pm. A BBQ will be served at 8:00pm and more importantly drinks will be available at the bar.

Sarah Hornby, who has more degrees than a thermometer, has kindly agreed to act as Quizmaster for the night..

The cost for the BBQ will be £10 per person and of course family and friends are more than welcome (especially if they have successful on a quiz show before).

It’s a great opportunity to thank June who lets us use her club twice a week but doesn’t take a penny from us. Please drink generously on the night.

So block out your diary and help celebrate the great achievements by our runners.
CHARITY CORNER
Barnes Runners have decided to support Leukaemia Research as a club charity for the coming year.
This from their website http://www.britmilfit.com- “We are the original 'military style' training provider. Set up in 1999 and now operating across the UK, we offer the best way to get fit while having fun in the great outdoors! A key to our members' fitness is the motivation provided by our professional instructors.”

It sounds like a fun way to add variety to our running. This is a trial class – it’s free. If members like it , we may consider having monthly sessions with BMF.

Thanks to our secretary, Fiona Fenton, for organising this.
By Brent Davis
Its website - www.lrf.org.uk– says: Leukaemia Research was established in 1960 and is still the only national research charity devoted exclusively to leukaemia, the lymphomas, myeloma, aplastic anaemia, myelodysplasia, the myeloproliferative disorders and the related blood disorders in both children and adults.

“We receive no government grants and depend entirely on voluntary donations.”

The BR committee has agree to make a small donation - £1 – for each paid-up club member. We also ask you to consider joining LR’s “Banana Army” and raising funds for them if you take part in races.

Other fund-raising ideas gratefully received. Why not consider making a donation every time you fail to turn up to a club run you planned to take part in?

Damaris O’Hanlon - damariso@runbox.comis our charity champion. David Cornock and Brent Davis have already raised £40 with a sponsored dance at a wedding party (more details are available only in return for further donations).

BR WEDDING BELLS
Warmest congratulations to Barnes Runners Sam Allpass and Ella Truscott, who married at St Mary’s, Church on March 30.

Sam then whisked Ella off to the Caribbean for some pre-marathon warm weather training – or what the rest of us know as a honeymoon.

The Bugle beat off some very high bids from Hello! And OK! Magazine for this exclusive photograph.

Barnes Runners T-shirts are still available from David Cornock – priced £10, short or long-sleeved.

This is what they look like after 25 miles of marathon running.

Thanks (?) to Sarah “paparazzi” Pitcher for the photograph from Rotterdam.

Please send any stories/photographs for the next Bugle to enquiries@barnesrunners.co.uk
