BUGLE READERS RACE TO CATCH
LATEST EDITION HOT OFF PRESS

ELLA AND SAM’S ULTRA MARATHON
The very best of luck to Ella Truscott and Sam Allpass, who are starting the longest race of all on March 30. They’ve getting married at St Mary’s church, Barnes.

The Barnes Bugle is also available as an Adobe Acrobat (pdf) download....

Actually, it’s a photograph of the 1908 Olympic marathon in London (allegedly). It’s a cunning ruse to draw you in to read an article about a big shake-up in the way our sport is run. It starts next week – and it could hit Barnes Runners in the pocket.

I’ll try not to bore you with the politics of it (if I fail, turn to page 2 for the usual gossip and trivia), but we need to decide which of two organisations we join.

The choice is between England Athletics (the establishment option) or the new Association of Running Clubs which has been set up by clubs unhappy with the cost and bureaucracy of EA. http://www.runningclubs.org.uk/.

Affiliating to England Athletics would cost the club around £215 for the coming financial year, compared with £120 currently. The 2008 fees would be £325.

This would cover us for insurance and give members discounts in races organised by EA clubs. ARC fees would total approximately £112 each year.

Most clubs similar to ours – for example, Sheen Shufflers – will affiliate to the ARC. Your committee will discuss this issue this week – if you have any questions or views, please contact us via enquiries@barnesrunners.co.uk.

Sam has been conscientiously training for the London Marathon but hopefully will factor in a rest day for this Friday rather than use the journey between St Mary’s and the reception venue near Kew Bridge to squeeze in some speedwork training. Perhaps Ella should hide his running shoes, just in case.

The Bugle has been outbid by Hello! for the real thing, so here’s a photo of Ella and Sam rehearsing for that cutting the cake moment.

GOOD LUCK SUZI……
Good luck too to Suzi Edwards, who is leaving London to do good deeds in Africa. “I can’t come running with the club because I’m helping the people of war-torn Sudan” has to be the best entry yet for the Bumper Book of Excuses. Even Janet never thought of that one. Good luck, Suzi, and take care - we’ll be thinking of you.
BARGAIN KIT OFFER
Got your club kit yet? Top quality Barnes Runners shirts are now also available in a short-sleeved version. Still subsidised by the club at knockdown prices. The Bugle will continue to print these photos of the club’s anonymous “supermodel” until the shirts sell out – you have been warned.
DIARY DATES
Barnes resident Christien Bird has been in touch, via Sam, with details of a 10k fund-raiser on June 10, a short sprint for our marathon types……

Dear all,

On the 10th of June our charity is organising a 10k fun run (or race as fast as you can), this is to be a fundraising event. It looks like it is going to be a good day out and a good reason to get fit.............
(or even fitter)!

META is a new charity aiming to put psychological services into primary and secondary schools. This is no navel staring therapy but solution focussed education to help children, teachers and parents.
More information can be found on our site: www.METAcharity.org.uk. The details of the run and entry form are attached.

I am sure you understand I have only selected my very fit special friends for this event, so think how lucky you are!

If you have any fit friends yourself who are happy to support this event, it would be great if you could spread the word.

....apparently there are going to be lots of muffins and smoothies at the end, and walking is definitely an option.

Lots of love

RIDDLE OF MYSTERY RUNNER
Barnes Runners committee members have been shocked to hear reports that one of their number has been seen……..running. This goes against everything the committee stands for. Committee members running may be the thin end of the wedge, ruining our reputation as a breakfast club . The member in question was apparently seen in Church Road on a Sunday morning in March. Were you in the area? The committee police have issued a photofit picture of the said mystery runner and would like to speak to this suspect, if only to eliminate her from their enquiries.
