MARINA’S
STORY: “I JOINED BARNES RUNNERS - AND NEVER LOOKED BACK”
Readers
of Runner’s World now know the lady in the photograph as well as we
do. Barnes Runner Marina Othman features in the latest issue of the magazine
with a remarkable story of how running helped her recover from a brain haemorrhage.
Marina fell ill in June 2004, leading to balance and sight problems, but surprised
doctors with her recovery.
She
told Runner‘s World, “At my six-month check-up after the haemorrhage
I think the doctor thought I was joking when I said I was training for a half-marathon.
They told me it would take two years to get back into my previous shape.”
Nine months after the brain haemorrhage, Marina finished the Connemara half-marathon.
You can read Marina’s
story on p38 of the November edition, or on our club notice board. Marina
may by now be blushing at the publicity, but her experience will inspire
many others otherwise tempted to reach for The Bumper Book….
And as she so nicely
put it,“I joined a running club and have never looked back.”
MARATHON
MARVELS
Two
more entries for our Barnes Runners marathon hall of fame this month. Dave
Kelly, shown modelling the 2006 Barnes Runners T-shirt (unbloodied version),
completed the Abingdon Marathon in October. Helga Taylor stormed into the
Millennium Stadium to finish the Cardiff Marathon. Both finished their first
marathons in respectable times. Helga and colleagues helped raise more than
£5,000 for Breast Cancer Care. Marathon veteran and Treasurer Nick Willan
completed the Great North Run half-marathon. Well run all!
BARNES
BREAKFAST CLUB TRAINING CAMP
The exclusive Barnes
Bugle photograph shows club members Dorte, David, Damaris, Sophia, Mike,
Kieran, Nick and Dave enjoying a well-earned breakfast at L’Amandine
in Church Road after our Sunday morning run. You don’t have to run
to joint the Barnes Breakfast Club - just pop in wearing your running kit,
order from the menu, and your clubmates will be none the wiser.
After all, Paula Radcliffe
has offered this helpful (?) training tip: “I regularly eat four squares
of dairy milk chocolate before training and major races”. She’s
sponsored by Cadbury, in case you didn’t realise it, but the advice
may work. Six months pregnant, she still comfortably beat our chairman,
David Cornock, in the RunLondon 10k last month.
THANKS, WEBMAESTRO
You may not know Mark
Whalley, but you will have seen his work. Mark is our IT guru - and looks
after the www.barnesrunners.co.uk website. Mark helps us out from the goodness
of his heart, declining a fee as we are a community-based non-profit club.
After some persuasion, he did agree to accept a couple of bottles of wine
in gratitude for his work. We have also, at Mark’s request, made a small
donation to Macmillan Cancer Support. Mark’s expertise is available
via Mark.Whalley@auvergneITC.com
ON THE RUN
For those not tempted
by marathons, here’s a race with a difference. Barnes Runners will be
out at force for the Grim 8 on Saturday, December 2. This is a muddy eight-mile
race along a tank-training course near Aldershot. Enter online www.grimchallenge.co.uk.
A money-saving reminder:
Barnes Runners is affiliated to the South of England Athletic Association,
you should get a discount on the entry fees for most organised races. Run
26 marathons a year and your membership has paid for itself! The clubs also
paid the entry fees for members taking part the River Relay (see last month’s
Bugle). Up and Running, East Sheen, continue to offer 10 per cent discount
for members.
If anyone fancies dressing
up as Santa, then a 6k charity race in Battersea Park on December 9 may be
for you. Entry costs £18 but includes hire of your Santa costume - check
it out at www.runnersworld.co.uk/events/

PARTY TIME
There
are fewer than 60 running days to Christmas. The party animals on the BR committee
are working hard on our Christmas bash. Details to follow in the next Bugle.
Happy Running!
