The Barnes Bugle: News from…..

WEDDING DAY BLISS ON THE RUN
And with this run……Father
Onn blesses Barnes Runners
Not many people still
celebrate Charles & Diana’s wedding anniversary. Even fewer mark
it with a run, but Teddington-based Stragglers are a different sort of running
club. The Wedding Day 7K has been run every year since 1981 and has its own
unique atmosphere, with human kilometre markers and bollards. The organiser
answers to the name of Father Onn – he’s the one in the dog collar
(and wearing socks with sandals) who gatecrashed our team photograph.
Thirteen BR members took
part in the race on a steamy Friday July night in Bushy Park – and enjoyed
the ample opportunities for carbo-loading on the Hampton Hill cricket pitch
afterwards. There was even live music - Oscar Sumpter led the BR dancing from
mid-off.
James Gourlay was the
first Barnes Runner home - 51st out of 517 runners, in 27:50. Our men’s
first team came 15th in their category, the women 14th - you can see all the
results at www.stragglers.org.
We even came home with
a trophy, although apparently the Guinness Tray isn’t as prestigious
as first thought and the barmaid at Hampton Hill cricket club would like it
back sometime.
A fantastic turnout and
a great night - gold medals to Brent and Jim for organizing everything.
We have also had good turnouts for handicap challenges against Sheen Shufflers,
the start of what will hopefully be a long and friendly rivalry..
Our next club running
event will be the River Relay on September 10. It sounds like another great
outing - all abilities welcome - please contact brent.davis@bt.com for more
information.
HOW TO RUN FASTER

Our founder, Janet Stansfield,
is taking special training sessions on the first Thursday of every month.
These offer members the chance to get more from running, with an emphasis
on speedwork, courtesy of Janet, who runs www.youniquefitness.com. The well-organised
sessions are good fun, especially if you want to learn how to walk like a
bear (that’s what I call a “personalized lifestyle solution”).
We meet at the rugby clubhouse at 7pm for a 7.15pm start.
KITTED OUT
The main photo shows us proudly wearing the new Barnes Runners T-shirts.
There have been one or two production difficulties - the colours run faster
than most of our members and fade just as quickly - but the look is very trendy
and after a couple of washes less Vaseline is required on the run. If you’ve
ordered one, please contact David Cornock to arrange payment and delivery.
Thanks.
MARATHON HALL OF FAME
Barnes Runners have been well-represented in marathons this year. Take a
bow Nigel Hartley, Ian Stroud and Suzi Hall (all London), Brent Davis, Kirstie
Dunlop and Sarah Hynes (all Paris) and Jim Perrie (Stratford on Avon). Good
luck to Jim in the London Triathlon.
HOT HOT HOT
As you may have noticed, it’s been a bit hot of late. Some members
suggested we meet earlier on Sundays. We decided to keep the same 9.45 for
10am time, partly to avoid confusion and partly because on hot days it’s
not that much cooler an hour earlier. A BBC weatherman advises that to avoid
the morning heat it’s best to run before the run rises……..or
stay in bed, presumably.
CHANGING FACES
Some committee changes have taken place since the last newsletter. David
Cornock is our new chairman, Sarah Hornby is membership secretary, Brent Davis
and Jim Perrie organise running and social events. Our founder Janet Stansfield
is still club secretary and Nick Willan still keeps us out of the red as treasurer.
The next committee meeting is on Wednesday, September 26. All paid-up members
welcome.
BRING A FRIEND
We now have around 50 paid-up members, but we’d like to share the joys
of BR with more of the runners out there in south-west London. We’re
planning an event designed to attract new members in September. Watch this
space.
SUBSCRIPTIONS
Subs remain £25 a year, just 50p a week. This gives you reductions
in race entry fees (we’re affiliated to the SEAA) and 10 per cent off
at Up and Running in East Sheen. New members can enjoy three “free”
runs with us before being asked to join.
If you haven’t paid up for 2006/7 please cough up now - see Nick Willan.
I CAN’T GO RUNNING TONIGHT BECAUSE……
You know the feeling. You planned to put in a fast six miles after work,
but something came up. We’re collecting entries for the Bumper Book
of Running Excuses, the running equivalent of “the dog ate my homework”.
This notice was spotted aboard the MS Marco Polo - it ruined my plans to do
a deck-bound marathon before breakfast.
All excuses gratefully received. I’ll treat the author of the year’s
most feeble to a croissant or two at L’Amandine, the café in
Chuch Road where many of us gather after our Sunday runs.
Happy Running!
